Shiels was founded in 1945, by Jack Shiels. For the next 32 years Jack operated the business with his wife until his death in 1977. It was then that Jack's widow sold the Shiels store to Albert Bensimon and his wife Nyra.

The store originally sold jewellery, giftware and silver-plated merchandise. However, Albert and Nyra quickly changed the selection to include more precious jewellery, gold and silver, while the giftware lines were dropped. The aim was to establish a reputation for quality, value and range.

The response was overwhelming and the success of Shiels surpassed all expectations. This reputation has helped Shiels expand to all the major shopping centre's in metropolitan Adelaide and across Perth.
