Painting the Town Red
The colour redolent of passion, sensuality and romantic love. In pre-dynastic Egypt, red was associated with health and well being. In medieval times, red became increasingly the colour associated with power, majesty and authority.
In the Melbourne Myer Autumn/Winter 2014 Fashion Launch, reds added a succulent splash of colour to the otherwise sombre and sober tones normally associated with the season. In April, 2014, Miss World Australia, Ms Erin Holland, stole attention at the Sydney Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, dressed in a playful red jumpsuit. Red still leaves us spellbound and seduced..
The Red Carpet at the 2013 Grammys was stolen by an incandescent Rihanna, resplendent and riveting in her line silhouette, translucent chiffon bodice, formal, electric- crimson gown whose train appeared to merge majestically into the carpet upon which she serenely sauntered.
On July 4th, 2014, Independence Day in the USA, Rihanna did it again in a scarlet see- through slip with jagged hemline high above the knee and matching scarlet 3 inch heels. A lady in red, painting West Hollywood the same colour.
The transition from celebrity -red high fashion to celebrity red jewellery was perhaps ignited by the English. The English love affair for ruby as an engagement ring alternative to diamonds was sparked by Prince Andrew’s engagement to Sarah Ferguson in 1986. He, in consultation with Garrard Jewellers, Mayfair, helped design the ring, set with an oval cut, pigeon- blood ruby surrounded by ten tear- drop diamonds. The inspiration was Sarah’s fiery red hair. The Americans followed suit. In 2010, it was the most natural thing in the world for Eric Johnson to give Jessica Simpson a Neil Lane designed, five carat, cushion- cut ruby engagement ring flanked by two pear shaped diamonds. July is her birthday and so ruby is her gem. What could speak more eloquently of his love for her than that?
Another July birthday girl received a ruby. Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, gave his wife, Priscilla Chan, a simple 3 carat ruby wedding ring he designed himself. The cultural symbolism of good fortune and prosperity in Chinese philosophy made the choice even more appropriate . The Golden Globes and Oscars were, and are, ruby red enamoured also..
At the 2014 Golden Globes, Taylor Swift accessorized her rose red, Caroline Herrera bustier gown with a vintage, Lorraine Swartz, flower cluster three-ring set with twelve tear- drop faceted natural rubies and cushion cut diamonds.
When Scarlett Johansson presented at the Oscars she also chose red, in her case, a Dolce and Gabbana burgundy- lace formal gown and yet again her jewellery drew attention away from haute couture to haute joaillerie. The cabochon rubies in her Anna Hu- designed Dragon Flower ring and ruby stud earrings left viewers struggling for suitable superlatives. You can delight in ruby too.
