When Meghan Markle became engaged to Prince Harry, the world followed along in awe at the modern fairy tale that was unfolding. Not only was she the first American to marry into the British Royal family since socialite Wallis Simpson married the Duke of Windsor in 1937 (and the first African-American), but she was also an accomplished actress with a penchant for fashion. Naturally, what ensued was the numerous comparisons to Grace Kelly, an actress who famously married into the Monaco Royal family over half a century earlier.

Much like Kelly, Meghan has quickly become a fashion icon known for her more contemporary attire as well as a penchant for high-end clothing and diamond jewellery. From her finely-tailored pantsuits to her sleek couture gowns, it is not hard to see why so many are so eager to emulate the California native’s somewhat down to earth, cool-girl style. One royal accessory that fashion and jewellery lovers alike would be keen to emulate the most is Meghan Markle’s engagement ring. Given to Markle by her now-husband Prince Harry at the tail-end of 2017 following their whirlwind headline-making romance, it is not hard to see why this unique trilogy engagement ring is the envy of many.

Read on as we unpack all the juicy details of Meghan Markle’s engagement ring.

Overview:

Meghan Markle’s Engagement Ring

Boasting three sparkling white diamonds, a centre cushion-cut diamond and two round-cut diamonds on either side of the centre one. Meghan’s diamond engagement ring is the complete antithesis of sister-in-law Kate Middleton's sapphire engagement ring that used to belong to Princess Diana many moons ago. While it may not be a family heirloom like the crown jewel Garrat creation worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, the diamond ring still holds a lot of sentimental value-particularly for the power couple. Personally designed by Prince Harry with London-based jeweller Cleave & Co., the 3-carat cushion-cut diamond was sourced from Botswana, a country that holds a lot of significance for the couple who credit the African nation as the place they fell in love. The two brilliant-cut diamonds that surround the Botswana stone were sourced from Harry’s mother, Princess Diana’s private collection in what is a fitting tribute to the late icon. The cushion-cut engagement ring is complete with a dainty yellow gold band that helps the ring feel a little more understated, yet still very glamorous.

Although, it is not publicly known what the ring cost, according to experts the centre diamond alone would have likely set the Duke of Sussex back a cool £70,000 - £115,000 ($123,000 - $205,000 in Australian dollars). Following Meghan and Harry’s 2018 wedding, the former actress would adorn a simple gold ring with a thin plain band as her wedding ring. However, months later eagle-eyed social media users noticed that Meghan’s ring underwent a small facelift to accommodate Meghan’s fluctuating finger size due to her pregnancy with the couple’s first child, Archie.

At the time, Prince Harry reportedly enlisted the help of Hollywood’s go-to engagement ring designer Lorraine Schwartz to adjust the ring’s size and replace the plain gold band with an even thinner band that was set with mico-pave diamonds. This design alteration was also made to complete the dainty pave style eternity ring that Harry gave Meghan following their one-year wedding anniversary and the birth of their son. The ring that the Duke of Sussex presented Meghan is a stark contrast to the diamond solitaire engagement ring that the former actress received from her first husband, Trevor Engelson in 2011. Adorned with a thin platinum or white gold pave-style band, not much is known about the carat size or the price of the American’s princess-cut engagement ring or the sparkling wedding ring that she wore with it. However, there is one thing that is evident, the Duchess clearly has a thing for pave diamond rings.

Meghan Markle’s Husband

Fresh off the heels of her divorce from her first husband Trevor, Meghan was at the height of her career. Living in Toronto, Canada with a starring role in the highly successful legal drama Suits and a popular lifestyle blog known as The Tig, it is safe to say that falling in love was the furthest thing from her mind. That all changed when friends set the star up on a blind date with a mystery guy in August 2016.

That guy turned out to be Prince Harry and the two hit it off immediately, much to the world’s surprise. Known in the tabloids as a party boy Prince, Charles and Diana’s youngest son never appeared as though he wanted to settle down. With a slew of high profile relationships, Harry was notorious for hitting up London’s nightclubs scene-something that often got him into trouble with the media. So when the news broke about the couple in late-2016, the world was very much taken by surprise.

Before becoming engaged and entering life as a public couple in November 2017, the pair the very lowkey. Making secret trips to Botswana, Canada and Norway together the media speculation about these two was rife,  but they still managed to keep a pretty low profile. Word on the street is she officially met her partner’s very famous family including Prince Charles, Will, Kate, their kids and Queen Elizabeth II at the end of 2016.

All signs pointed to things getting serious when the couple was spotted picking out a Christmas tree together and Meghan was even seen wearing initial necklaces adorned with the letters “M” and “H”. The pair would continue to maintain a long-distance relationship while the actress was filming her TV show in Canada, which would headlines when the star announced that the current series she was starring in would be her last-a move proving she was gearing up for royal life. Eventually, Meghan made her debut at an official royal event while attending the Invictus Games opening ceremony in Toronto, an event spearheaded by the former British soldier who served his country (and his grandmother) in two tours of Afghanistan.

Meghan Markle’s Proposal & Wedding

Not keen on making his girlfriend wait as long as his brother made Kate wait, Harry officially got down on one knee and proposed to Meghan in November 2017. Taking a leaf from Prince William’s book and popping the question intimately, Harry gave Meghan the diamond sparkler while the two were attempting to roast a chicken one evening in their cottage at Kensington Palace in London.

The former actress and lifestyle blogger was apparently incredibly taken by surprise but very excited, barely allowing Harry to finish his speech before saying yes. In a sit-down interview with the couple after the palace officially announced their engagement, Meghan remarked that the proposal was very cosy and romantic. “...it was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee," the Suits star told the reporter at the time. Following the engagement, the couple would pose for an official photocall at Prince Charles’ primary residence Clarence House where they announced that their nuptials would take place in mid-2018.

Meghan Markle's Engagement Ring

Following months of fanfare, Meghan and Harry became the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in a grand ceremony at Windsor Castle. The bride wore a chic long-sleeved off the shoulder gown with a sleek bodice that was designed by French fashion house Givenchy, a label that previously created bespoke bridal gowns for the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Kim Kardashian and model, Lara Stone.

The bride accessorised her custom creation with glamorous bridal jewellery much of which was borrowed from Queen Elizabeth II and Lady Diana’s personal collection. Meghan’s sparkly look included a pair of large diamond stud earrings that the former actress previously purchased as a gift to herself to celebrate the success of her TV show Suits, an intricate diamond bracelet featuring an array of baguette and princess-cut diamonds as well as a bandeau tiara. Once belonging to the Queen’s own grandmother, Queen Mary, Mary had the tiara made in 1932 from a brooch she was given by the County of Lincoln in 1893. For the couple’s private reception, Meghan changed into a slightly more relaxed high-neck gown designed by British designer Stella McCartney that she fashioned with a stylish updo, a pair of diamond drop earrings and a mesmerising aquamarine ring from Princess Diana’s private collection so that she could have part of her there on the couple's big day.
