There is nothing quite like the celebration that comes with welcoming a new baby into the family, especially when you and your partner are new parents. Babies are a blessing and bring so much joy to your life while also signalling a whole new chapter. One that makes it difficult to imagine what life was like before that new bundle of joy entered your world. Of course, no celebration is really ever complete without gifts as they are the perfect way to commemorate all the special occasions in your life and serve as almost a momentum that you will go on to cherish for the rest of your life. Naturally, the birth of a new baby is one that many new parents are eager to commemorate somehow, namely, in the form of push presents

Push presents are a huge trend among new parents nowadays, especially for new mums and mums-to-be. Much like the name suggests, a push present is a gift (usually in the form of jewellery, watches and other luxury items) given to a new mum as a way to show gratitude for her efforts involved in bringing new life into the world. Aside from serving as some kind of consolation for the physical journey a mother has gone through over the last nine months and during the often brutal labour process, it also serves as somewhat of a tribute to your little one and helps you keep them close-even when they’re all grown up.

Trend Alert: Push Presents | Overview

Overview:

The Trend

While the phenomenon of push presents may seem like a relatively new trend, it is actually one that dates back hundreds of years. However, it wasn’t always about diamond jewellery or expensive handbags. Supposedly, the act of giving someone gifts following the birth of a new baby can be traced back to India centuries ago when people would shower a new mother with gifts in a ritual known as ‘Godh Bharai’. Godh Bharia translates to ‘fill the lap’ in Hindi and it was a tradition that involved spoiling a new mother with a myriad of fruits, sweets and treats that help celebrate the new life. This was a celebration typically held within the seventh or eighth month of pregnancy and is seen as a way to help expectant mothers to relax and avoid strenuous tasks such as chores.

Trend Alert: Push Presents | The Meaning

It wouldn’t be until the early 2010s that expectant parents in the Western world began to embrace the trend of push presents and like any other trend, it was largely spearheaded by celebrities who made the news for giving and receiving lavish gifts. For example, when Kim Kardashian welcomed her second child Saint, she reportedly received a choker-style diamond necklace reportedly worth upwards of $1 million. Not surprisingly, singer Marc Anthony showered J.Lo with an equally opulent gift when the singer welcomed the couple’s twins Max and Emme-a pair of diamond earrings worth $2.5 million. That’s $1 million for each twin if we’re being technical. And while most celebrities tend to play it safe with diamond jewellery and other lavish jewels, others get extra creative with their gifts-like Kylie Jenner who was gifted a $1 million Ferrari when she welcomed daughter Stormi back in 2018.

The Meaning

Push presents may seem like a tradition that was conjured up by jewellers as a way to sell diamond rings and other merchandise, however, to many new parents it is about so much more than that. A push present often means something different for each couple in the sense that while some use it to reward their partner for the discomfort they have gone through or to give their thanks for sacrificing their bodies in order to nurture their child over the past nine months, others use it as a way to materialise this special moment and potentially have something to hand down to that child one day. For other couples, the push present serves as something much deeper than that, particularly, if they have previously experienced pregnancy loss or struggled to fall conceive as it symbolises that there is light after darkness.

Trend Alert: Push Presents | The Meaning

Perhaps one of the most popular kinds of push present is the eternity ring. Eternity rings are a thin band of metal often featuring diamonds or gemstones that almost resemble a wedding. Often completing a bridal set, eternity rings are designed to sit on either side of the engagement ring, in a similar manner that wedding rings do. Eternity rings are usually exchanged on one of two occasions, with one of those occasions being after the first wedding anniversary or following the birth of a couple’s first child. These rings are often given upon reaching one of these milestones as they serve as a reminder of the commitment that a couple made on their wedding day. An eternity ring is also thought to symbolise a couple’s everlasting love and an unbreakable bond that a couple now shares through their child.

Birthstone Jewellery

From Christmases to birthdays and everything in between, gemstone jewellery is always a go-to gift for people. However, there is arguably, no better chance to gift someone a gemstone piece than as a push present. For centuries, gemstones have been lauded for their majestic colours, their beautiful symbolism and their reported spiritual properties, so it should come as no surprise that they are a popular push present. In fact, this is another jewellery trend that many celebrities are keen on when it comes to push presents. After welcoming their child in 2013, singer Jessica Simpson featured a pair of stud earrings adorned with moonstones, the alternative June birthstone to represent their son’s birth month.

There is nothing that says customized like a birthstone present, and this occasion makes it all the more special because it is a cute little way of telling the mum ‘this one is unique, just like you’. Birthstone jewellery, aside from its cute charm, is also all the rage in the fashion world today. With most gemstones available in almost every kind of accessory, from rings to bracelets and pendants, they make for extremely versatile accessories, because of how well their colours range. They can also be paired with nearly every outfit. You don't even necessarily have to get a piece that symbolises your child's birthstone, alternatively, you could choose an item that matches your partner's or one that is in the hue of their favourite colour. Emerald jewellery is especially popular for push presents as the stone is thought to be connected to rebirth and fertility as well as romance and hope.

Dress Rings

Everyone deserves to have their wish list achieved, especially if it’s something as sentimental and special as a push present. And what could be more special than a dress ring or a cocktail-style ring? Unlike engagement rings or stacking rings that tend to be more classic and subtle will their design, dress rings are usually one-of-a-kind pieces-meaning they are often designed to be incredibly opulent. As a result, many women usually reserve these rings for special occasions such as weddings and formal events. But while they may be grand, their detailing is often incredibly timeless an aspect that makes them ideal to hand down to your child one day during a special moment in their life.

Trend Alert: Push Presents | Dress Rings

When shopping for the perfect dress ring to give as a push present, most will opt for diamond rings as not only are diamonds incredibly special, but they are often a symbol of eternal love, the unbreakable bond between a couple as well as strength and invincibility. Others will often go down a more personal route with gemstone rings, choosing a piece adorned with their baby's birthstone or even the mother’s birthstone or they will choose the stone based on its meaning. Arguably the most popular gemstone cocktail rings are emerald rings, ruby rings and sapphire rings, both for their eye-catching colour and stunning symbolism. Pearl rings are also very popular for dress rings as they are neutral, while also representing femininity, purity, wisdom, patience and peace. These are traits that are synonymous with motherhood.

Initial Jewellery

The best kinds of gifts are the ones that are very practical because it ensures they are going to garner a lot of use. The same can be said about push presents, especially if they’re jewellery. And while you might be thinking, ‘how could jewellery be practical?’ Rest assured that it can be. The most practical kind of jewellery you can get as a push present is a piece that is not only very versatile but is also very durable and timeless. No item fits the bill for this better than initial jewellery. From playful initial necklaces to dainty stud earrings adorned with a particular letter, personalised jewellery never dates. Often made from durable precious metals that rarely discolour and crafted from a timeless design, initial jewellery is an excellent tribute to this new life you have created.

The great thing about initial jewellery is that there are so many ways that your partner can incorporate it into their personal style. Whether it's a warm gold necklace, a dazzling pair of diamond stud earrings or a delicate chain bracelet embossed with your baby or partner’s initials, they will certainly have no problems pairing it with any outfit for all types of occasions. There are also so many ways that you can style these pieces so that you can change up your look. If it’s an initial pendant, for example, your partner can add some edge to your look by layering it with chains or other pendants. If your partner has multiple ear piercings and you opt to get them a pair of initial earrings, they can easily stack them by pairing them with other studs, sleeper earrings or even a pair of hoop earrings

Charm Bracelets

Perhaps the most playful kind of push present is charm bracelets. Charm bracelets are an excellent way to commemorate the birth of your littlest family member as they pretty much go with everything, and can be personalised. From romantic padlock bracelets and regal belcher bracelets to more contemporary chain styles, charm bracelets are an easy way to have fun with your look while simultaneously getting a bit personal in the process. Keep it simple with a few evenly spread charms that are significant to you and your child, or go a little daring by layering it with many-adding a few more whenever your child reaches a new milestone. You could even get a little creative and include a charm to represent each family member, adding a new one as your brood grows.

Trend Alert: Push Presents | Charm Bracelets

When shopping for push presents, some partners will get a little creative and purchase charms for a bracelet that their partner already owns. This can be a great opportunity to add to the charms they are already collecting to symbolise particular milestones such as significant birthdays, graduations, weddings or special trips that they have been on. You could pick something as ‘on-the-nose’ as a pair of babies feet, a teddy bear and a small heart brandished with the word ‘mum’, or you could be a little more subtle with your baby’s initial, a charm that is the colour of their birthstone and even a playful animal with the innocence of a child such as a puppy or a unicorn.
