Claddagh Jewellery

Claddagh jewellery is the ultimate symbol of love. Each part of the classic Irish design is symbolic. The hands represent friendship, the heart signifies love and the crown embodies loyalty. 

The Claddagh design has become popular as a pendant or earrings. Tradition uses the Claddagh on a ring, however. There are four ways your Claddagh ring can be worn to convey your relationship status.

Wear it on your right hand, heart facing out to show your heart is open to love. Or turn the heart in towards the wearer on your right hand to show you are taken. On the left hand, with the heart pointing out, the Claddagh shows engagement. And turn the heart in towards you on the left hand to tell the world you are married!

What does Claddagh mean?

The Claggagh is an Irish symbol that has three important aspects. It is a crowned heart that is held by two hands. Symbolically, the heart represents love, the crown signifies loyalty and the hands are a sign of friendship. It can be given to any person, such as a friend, parent or partner to signify your love. 

Can you wear a Claddagh If you aren't Irish?

Yes! The Claddagh is a universal symbol of love, while it does have Irish origins, its symbolism of love, friendship and loyalty transcends cultures and has been embraced throughout the world.

What is the correct way to wear a Claddagh ring?

There are three ways to wear a Claddagh ring. 

  1. If you are single and open to meeting someone, you should wear the ring on your right hand with the heart facing outwards.
  2. If you are in a relationship, you should wear the ring on your right hand with the heart facing inwards
  3. If you are engaged to be married, you can wear the Claddagh on your left ring finger with the heart facing outwards.
Are Claddagh rings traditionally gold or silver?

Legend says that the first Claddagh ring was made out of yellow gold and this is the traditional colour, however, there is no rule saying that Claddagh rings need to be completely traditional. Today, many rings are made with various precious metals including gemstones to add even more beauty to the design.
