In this ever-evolving, trend-based and social media landscape, one thing that appears to remain the same is our taste in engagement rings.
We recently surveyed a bunch of Aussies to get their thoughts on all things bridal and it turns out that while maximalism and bold designs may be a big part of our everyday jewellery collection, subtler and more classic designs are the more popular choices when it comes to significant jewellery like engagement rings.
Gathering responses from a range of women, the survey provided a snapshot of prevailing trends regarding design, style, and budget considerations.
The go-to choice? The classic diamond solitaire engagement ring secured a majority with 53.4%. On the flip side, alternative styles like halo engagement rings trailed behind with 18.5% of the votes, followed by trilogy, cluster, and coloured gemstone designs.
Kylie Pitt, Head Diamond Buyer at Shiels Jewellers, shared her perspective on the enduring popularity of classic designs, noting that "A brilliant-cut solitaire engagement ring will always be a popular choice because they're classic and timeless." She also pointed out the ongoing appeal of a specific design within their collection, a six-claw knife-edge solitaire engagement ring.
We're hearing a lot about the term "quiet luxury" in fashion, jewellery and accessories space, particularly on social media sites such as TikTok and Instagram. These latest survey results suggest that this 'less is more' approach to style is not just having an impact on the clothes we wear but also on the engagement rings we would most likely want our partner to pop the question with.
Speaking of less is more, the survey also indicated that more and more people are embracing lab-grown diamonds than ever before with over 30% preferring lab-grown diamond engagement rings to their mined counterparts because they give shoppers the chance to own a bigger and brighter diamond at a budget-friendlier price.
Simultaneously, the survey detected a budding interest in fancy diamond cuts, possibly influenced by the sway of social media trends and what engagement ring styles celebrities are wearing. Shapes like ovals, cushions, and pears are quietly making their mark, signalling a subtle shift in preferences.
Oval-cut engagement rings with a classic solitaire setting in particular, have been gaining a lot of momentum with brides, especially after being spotted worn by the likes of Hailey Bieber, Kourtney Kardashian and Blake Lively.
To sum it up, Shiels' survey provides a low-key peek into the varied preferences within the Australian engagement ring scene. While classics like the solitaire maintain their appeal, there's a soft buzz around innovative cuts, showcasing the ever-evolving choices, especially in this tech-heavy landscape.
