Shiels Jewellery Care Guide
A Little Care Goes A Long Way…
Jewellery sees a lot in everyday life, so a little care can make a real difference to how it looks over time. Simple, everyday habits like keeping pieces clean and dry, taking them off before bed, and avoiding contact with perfumes and chemicals, will help you get more sparkle out of your jewellery. And to make looking after your favourite pieces even easier, we’ve included some special care instructions below:
DIAMONDS
Diamonds are famously durable, but they still benefit from regular care. Give them a gentle clean with warm water, a touch of mild soap and a soft brush - especially around the setting where oils can build up. Rinse well and dry with a polishing cloth. Check that stones remain secure, and store separately from other jewellery to prevent scratches.
GEMSTONES
Gemstones are more delicate than diamonds, so gentle care keeps them looking their best. A quick wash with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth works well, but avoid soaking softer or porous stones like opals or pearls.
Keep gemstones away from harsh chemicals, extreme heat, or prolonged sunlight, and store each piece separately to prevent scratches and colour fading.
GOLD & PLATINUM
A gentle wash in warm, soapy water with a soft cloth helps keep gold and platinum looking their best, while a soft brush helps with detailed settings. Avoid harsh chemicals or bleach, which can dull the finish. Platinum naturally develops a soft patina over time, but a gentle polish can bring back a brighter shine. Store pieces separately to prevent scratches.
GOLD-FILLED
Gold-filled jewellery is designed for everyday wear with the right care. Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing to remove oils and polish occasionally to maintain shine. Store pieces separately to protect the finish.
GOLD-PLATED
Gold-plated jewellery is designed for occasional wear but can continue to look beautiful with the right care. Wipe/dab pieces gently after wearing with a soft, dry cloth (not a polishing cloth) and avoid water, chlorine, perfumes, lotions and hairspray. Store each piece separately to prevent scratches.
SILVER
Silver has a bright, natural shine that responds beautifully to everyday wear. As a naturally soft metal, it’s best to take a little extra care when wearing. Avoid tugging, catching on clothing, or sleeping in necklaces and bracelets. Store pieces separately to prevent scratches and tangling.
LEATHER
Leather straps and accessories stay soft and comfortable with simple care. Avoid water and strong chemicals, which can darken or stiffen leather. Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing, and store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
