My eldest son turned 8 this week. Eight!! I have officially been somebody's mum for eight whole years, and if that's not grounds for treating myself to a diamond ring, I don't know what is.
For a long time, I wouldn’t have been able to justify it – the cost, the guilt of spending something significant on myself when there are school shoes to buy, family holidays to save for, and approximately a thousand other things that feel more important than something just for me. Maybe it’s because I’m now working for a jeweller, but something has shifted and after eight years of putting everyone else first and holding it all together, I think I deserve it.
So, with my newfound liberation (and Mother’s Day right around the corner), it feels like the right moment to say something I don’t think gets said enough – mums, it’s ok for you to treat yourself too. Not instead of being celebrated by the people you love, but as well as. You’ve earned it. Full stop.
If becoming a mum has taught me anything, it’s how little I truly understood what my own mum did for me growing up. You just don’t get it until you’re in it… the invisible load, the mental gymnastics, the way you’d do absolutely anything for them without a second thought. Nothing prepares you for how much of yourself you pour into it, and I’m here to tell you you’re allowed to be proud of yourself for doing it.
