Measure at the end of the day
Fingers swell slightly through the day, so an evening measurement gives you the truest, most comfortable fit.
Measure the right finger
Sizes vary between fingers, and between your left and right hand. Always measure the exact finger you'll wear the ring on.
Wide bands fit tighter
Rings wider than 6mm, including most men's styles, can feel snugger than expected. If that's your style, consider sizing up half a size for everyday comfort.
Between two sizes?
Always round up. A ring that's a touch loose is a quick fix for our jewellers. One that's too tight to remove isn't.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT RING - WHAT TO CONSIDER
Finding the right ring goes beyond size alone. The style, width, and metal of a ring can all affect how it fits and feels on your finger day to day. A slim, delicate band will feel very different to a wide men's ring even if they're technically the same size - so it's worth thinking about the style you're shopping for before you measure.
For engagement rings, comfort is especially important as the ring will be worn constantly alongside a wedding band. If you're planning to stack rings, consider going up half a size to account for the combined fit. For men's rings and men's engagement rings, wider bands are standard - sizing up half to a full size from your measured size is a common recommendation.
If you're shopping for someone else, the average Australian women's ring size is N and the average men's ring size is T. These are useful starting points, but we always recommend a professional fitting where possible. Can I return a resized or special order ring?
Standard sizes M and Q come with 30-day online returns. Outside of that, resized rings and special order rings are made specifically for you, so they're final sale - no cancellations or change-of-mind returns apply. What is the average ring size for women?
The average ring size for women varies widely from person to person, however, typically most women fit somewhere in between three categories - small: I-M, medium: N-Q and large: R-U.

Are ring sizes universal?
Rings are sized on a universal scale, but different countries have different ring-size systems. For example in the UK and Australia, letters are used to determine ring size while in the USA, numbers are used.
When placing an order, keep in mind we use UK/ Australian letter sizing. Please refer to the chart above to determine and convert a ring size.
Can a ring be sized down?
Rings can be sized down. Here at Shiels, standard ring sizes are available with most rings while any other size can be resized at an additional cost. Please check the sizing details of each product.
Can a ring be sized up?
Rings can be resized in several ways depending on if they need to be bigger or smaller. However, it is important to note that each ring is different. If a ring is resized more than two sizes, either way, it can cause stress on the ring.

How do you know what ring size your girlfriend is?
Finding out what ring size your girlfriend is requires a little bit of investigation. Starting with identifying the ring sizes of her existing rings is a great start. Even if they are for the wrong finger, this will give you a handy guide. You can also attempt to measure her finger or hazard a guess.

How do I measure my ring size at home?
The easiest way is to use our digital sizer above, or order a Multisizer gaugeonline. Alternatively, wrap a thin strip of paper around your finger, mark where it overlaps, measure the length in millimetres and divide by 3.14 to get the diameter.

Can Shiels resize my ring after purchase?
Yes. Most rings can be resized by our in-store jewellery team. Resizing is free within 30 days of purchase on most styles. Some ring types - including full eternity bands and engraved designs - may have limitations. Visit your nearest Shiels store or contact us for advice specific to your ring.
What if I'm buying a ring as a gift and don't know the size?
Start with the average size for a safe guess - M, Q for women, T for men. Include a gift receipt so the recipient can have the ring resized at no cost. You can also try borrowing a ring they already wear and bringing it in to any Shiels store - our team can measure it and give you an accurate size recommendation.
