Just like your skin tone plays a massive role in deciding which jewellery suits you best, a similar understanding of tones and colours are required to accentuate the best of your outfits, and the best of your accessories. Follow this fun little guide to the “t”, and never go a day with a mismatched outfit.

The best place to start, in the words of Maria Von Trapp, is at the beginning. Let’s take a quick review of your wardrobe and its contents so far, and determine what the predominant tones and colours happen to be, along with what factors to look at to best identify your skin-tone. With these two factors ironed out, what you have ahead of you is a perfect map to figuring out how to style your pieces so as to appear not just effortless, but downright flattering.

Step One To Matching Your Jewellery: What’s With the Tone?

If you were a diva of a child growing up, chances are you have had this question come your way a lot. And now, though the context is different, we promise that it’s just as relevant. The first and most efficient step is to identify your skin tone, which will also allow you to be a better judge of which pieces of jewellery (and which metals) match both, your taste, and compliment your natural appearance. This little test is an easy-to-do process, which can determine the answer in a minute. One of those is to look at your inner-wrist (where your veins are the most prominent) and to look at them in good, natural lighting.

If your veins appear blue, you have a cool skin tone, and are more likely to look better in silver-toned metal pieces, with the likes of platinum. Cool skin tones are flattered by pieces that usually have gemstones, too, that are either colourless (like in the case of cubic zirconia) or, alternatively, belonging to the general spectrum of blues, purples, and perhaps even white. Here are some fun picks you can check out if your skin tone is cool.

If your veins appear greener, your skin tone is warm, making them compatible with warmer metals like yellow gold and rose gold (the difference between the two is explained in this post). This type of skin tone also goes very well with gemstones of warmer tones, like the fiery ruby, or pink-hued morganite.

If your veins seem a mix of the two, (or often purple), you have a mixed skin tone, which fits in closely and perfectly with the cooler skin tone category. These lucky folk have the best of both worlds at their disposal, and can pick out any of the colours, and can even play around with their combinations, in the form of mixing tones and hues.

Step Two: “What’s your favourite colour?”

This question will help you determine the best way to pair your jewellery with your wardrobe. Just like how skin tone is important to pick the perfectly complimenting jewellery, similar rules of undertones apply to the undertones of clothing and the metal tones of your accessories.

And while the skin-and-metal check dictates that warm be paired with warm, and cool be paired with cool, quite the opposite, too works efficiently in case of clothing. So here are some combinations you can try out:

  1. Try the statement gold with black or white: With a black or white outfit, you can never go wrong with a piece of jewellery that is either silver or gold. This will give it a pop that is cute, and will never really clash with the colour of your clothing. Since both the colours are neutral, either choice of metal in terms of necklaces, rings, or even earrings are perfect.
  2. In the Spring/Summer: Cool colours are the best bet with all your summery pastel dresses and clothes. You can’t go wrong with an adorable aquamarine pendant, or a dainty little silver bracelet. The natural colours like that of a blue topaz, or peridot are great with light-coloured clothing.
  3. Go bold and warm in Autumn/Winter: The warm colours of earth-toned or darker winter wear only get enhanced by the warm undertones of yellow gold, or even rose gold, both of which only add to the vibe. Another great thing about warm coloured metals is the way in which they incorporate, quite pleasingly, the several coloured gemstones and fit right in.
  4. Switcheroo: Swap out the rule of warm and cool for metals and gemstones! Try pairing warmer metals (like gold) with cool gemstones (like sapphires, or amethysts), and cool coloured metals (like silver) with warm gemstones (like rubies).
