HOW DO YOU CLEAN GEMSTONES?
With regular wear, dust and dirt will build up on your jewellery and gemstones, which can make the stone look dull. So regular cleaning is advised to keep your gemstones sparkling.
To clean your gemstones, you will need to gather some supplies. You will need a soft cloth, a soft-bristled brush, mild dish soap, and warm water.
Once you’ve got all your supplies add a few drops of the mild dish soap into a bowl of warm water and give it a mix around.
Next, take off your gemstone jewellery and put it in the soapy, warm water and let it soak for 10-15 minutes. This will help loosen any dirt or debris that is stuck on the stones.
Now you’re going to want to grab the soft-bristled brush and gently scrub the gemstones, don’t use too much pressure, as this could cause damage to the stones.
Lastly, rinse the gemstone jewellery in plain warm water to remove any soap, and then pat then pat the gemstones dry with the soft cloth. Avoid using heat to dry the stones, as this could also damage them.
WHAT TO AVOID WHEN CLEANING GEMSTONES
When it comes to cleaning gemstones there are some common mistakes that can be easily made. Ultrasonic cleaners can be used as a cleaning tool for jewellery, however, they can damage certain gemstones so before you use one check out the Dos and Don’t of ultrasonic cleaners.
Do not use harsh cleaning chemicals on your gemstones, such as bleach, ammonia, or acids as these can all cause damage to your precious gemstones.
HOW TO STORE GEMSTONES
All gemstones are hard and durable, but they do exist on a scale where some stones are harder than others. Diamonds for example, are the hardest gemstone on the planet. When gemstones of different hardness rub against each other, the softer stone can scratch and be damaged.
To prevent your gemstones from damaging each other, we recommend storing them in a soft cloth-lined box or pouch. Make sure the gemstones are stored separately to prevent them from scratching each other.
Gemstones like opals and pearls absorb moisture from the air, so to keep them safe keep them in an airtight box.
