What is a Solitaire Engagement Ring?

History of the Solitaire
The solitaire diamond ring can be traced all the way back to the Middle Ages and the Romans. The setting started out with a single uncut diamond set on a gold band. These original diamond crystals were acquired by Indian traders and were highly prized by the Romans; ‘The substance that possesses the greatest value, not only among the precious stones but of all human possessions.’ Indian and Islamic jewellers were the first to facet this gemstone and they did so by polishing the stones with a powder of lesser quality diamonds. This process quickly spread around the world and quickly transformed into the earliest form of a facet diamond. It wasn’t until the 1940’s that solitaire diamond rings were popularised as the must-have engagement jewellery until DeBeer’s famous ‘A diamond is forever’ campaign.
